Jim Katen grew up in New England where, beginning at the age of 12, he learned
framing and finish carpentry from an old Italian cabinetmaker. His training
involved old-school techniques including a glass of wine at the end of the
day for good work and a cuff on the side of the head
for bad work. He is proud to say that he can make any wood joint using only
hand tools.
He earned his BFA from SUNY Purchase in technical production and lighting
design and later worked for 12 years in regional theatre and off-Broadway.
He has made Peter Pan fly, Dracula disappear, and Hedda Gabler's head explode.
He quit theatre after settling in Oregon with the love of his life. In 1989
when his daughter was born, he became a stay-at-home dad, but got more than
he bargained for when his twin sons were born in 1992. Luckily, he had been
apprenticing to a home inspector and in 1993 began his own business. He has
since inspected thousands of private homes and hundreds of multi-family properties.
In addition to the Indagators, he is a member of ASHI and a past president
of the Oregon ASHI chapterThe Oregon Association of Home Inspectors.
He teaches continuing education classes for home inspectors in Oregon and
has served on national committees and workgroups.
Jim is an avid figure skater and, when not inspecting, can be found on any
available patch of ice, perfecting his toe loop.
