Larry
Cerro - Single Dad, Social Scientist, Saxophone player, Building Analyst
Social Scientist Larry Cerro (BA Social Science from Hofstra University)
decided to take a break from the cloistered university environment and further
develop his practical skills. Continuing his tradition of construction-oriented
summer jobs, he began working with a utility contractor as a lineman. Abandoning
the cold north after a year of that, Larry migrated to sunny Florida, where
he began working condo and apartment construction by day, and attending night
school in the trades. Larry established a repair and remodeling business,
and eventually, a property management firm.
With a thirst for knowledge and a burning desire to become self sufficient,
over the next several years Larry took the following courses at Lively Technical
School: Blue Print Reading and estimating - 60 hours, Heating, Air Conditioning
and Refrigeration - 120 hours, Industrial, Commercial, And Residential Electrical
Wiring - 338 hours, Gas Pipe Fitting, - 144 hours, Welding, Lively Vo-Tech,
51 hours, Building Construction, - 60 hours, Cabinet Making - 80 hours, Electronics,
- 80 hours.
After working for a while renovating the Sunland Hospital in Tallahassee,
Larry spent a winter as a lighting electrician for the ZZ Top East Coast Tour.
Back in Tallahassee, Florida, Larry returned his attention to home repairs
and renovations and property management, while evolving into a full-time building
inspector.
Larry is now a full-time construction consultant with the following credentials:
He is a State Registered Residential Building Contractor, Mechanical Contractor,
Class A Air Conditioning Contractor, and Roofing Contractor. He is a State
Certified Building Inspector, and state certified One and Two Family Dwelling
inspector as well as certified by SBCCI and CABO (the building code certification
agencies). He is a State Certified Radon Measurement Technician and Mitigation
Specialist, and a State Certified Energy Auditor.
Larry has served six years as a National Director of the American Society
of Home Inspectors (ASHI), and four years as the President of the Florida
chapter of ASHI. He is a past Director and Officer of the Florida Association
of Building Inspectors (FABI).
Larry is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator, and is recognized as
an expert witness in the home inspection field. Larry has been active in the
construction industry for over 30 years, and has been performing home inspections
in Tallahassee for over 20 years. Frequently consulted by TV and newspaper
reporters doing segments on home inspection, Larry has been featured in articles
by the Tallahassee Democrat and Tallahassee Magazine. He is a contributor
to the State Capital News, The ASHI Reporter, and the Florida Heritage Foundation
publication, News and Views. He has appeared several times on the PBS television
show, Accent, where he was featured on a series about home inspections. Larry
has conducted numerous presentations to homebuyers, real estate offices and
boards, universities, and educational seminars within the industry.
